A little snapshot of our initial day at the Posido A little snapshot of our initial day at the Posidonia Conference in Athens, Greece. Samantha has already revolutionized the way the US Coast Guard goes about inspecting hazardous cargo arriving in ports across the United States. Her Calypso program, with the use of AI to predict which of the thousands of containers arriving each day pose the greatest threat, has improved the Coast Guard's detection rate three-fold.
.
As her former professor for business innovation, she asked me to join her newly formed company, and I readily agreed. This is ground breaking stuff.
.
So we are now at the largest global maritime conference in the world and prepared to not only work with foreign security teams, but also introduce our second product Ulysses to shippers and vessel owners so they can proactively pack their containers in more strategic (and safe) fashion.

In the Fall of 2022, while living in Charleston, I In the Fall of 2022, while living in Charleston, I recorded myself performing basketball dribbling exercises. As I get older, I double down on my effort to maintain my fitness and athleticism. It is a personal source of pride and....honestly....it impacts my confidence and self esteem. Not too long after this video was recorded, I ruptured my right Achilles tendon playing soccer.
.
I have never had an injury quite like this. Over my lifetime I have broken more bones than I can count. They heal in 6-8 weeks and I am back at it. But this…..this injury was different. Recovery from an Achilles rupture is long under normal circumstances. But I had some setbacks and distractions along the way that added time to the process, and the road to recovery began to feel interminable. This week, almost A YEAR AND A HALF after my surgery and under the supervision of my physical therapist, I took my first jog. It was scary and uplifting at the same time. I had forgotten what it felt like to jog, and my lack of mobility over this lengthy period of time made me feel oddly vulnerable. But I was always determined. That never left me.
.
Today I went for a brief jog at home…unsupervised. It felt downright euphoric.
.
This coming summer, after a two year forced hiatus, I will be back at it, doing my basketball dribbling exercises and juggling my soccer ball.
.
My plight got me thinking. Life is a marathon, not a sprint. Over the miles that make up our lives, sometimes we walk slowly, sometimes we walk quickly, and sometimes we run. But the trick is to Never. Stop. Moving. Forward. No matter the pace.

After a two and a half hour flight from Brussels t After a two and a half hour flight from Brussels to Bucharest, Romania, we immediately hopped in our rental car and made the snowy three hour drive up the Carpathian Mountains to the Transylvanian town of Brasov.
.
From there we visited Bran, a village made famous by Bram Stoker. You might have heard of it. It is the home of a dude named Dracula. Bran Castle was everything we hoped it would be. Rich in history, well preserved.....and creepy. Snow falling, sky gray, today's weather was ideal for a tour of this nature.
.
Today also so happens to be Huong's birthday. At one point, Dracula pulled me aside and asked what Huong's secrets are regarding how she remains so ageless. He was sooo jealous. It was cute.
.
Dracula and I have something in common. Eternal love. While his was captured in a famous novel, our story is still being written.

Little known fact. Street artists from the South B Little known fact. Street artists from the South Bronx, the birthplace of graffiti, have been commissioned for almost fifty years to "tag" the buildings of European cities. Paris and Amsterdam were the first beneficiaries of this particular kind of artistic style, and Brussels soon followed. The godfather of Brussels tagging is Chuck "Kool Koor" Hargrove.
.
Kool Koor's first European art dealer was Belgian. And in 1984, Koor’s work was part of a Brussels exhibition. During his visit, he realized (1) the city and its people are amazing, and (2) the city's buildings were perfect canvases! His art began transforming the landscape, introducing beauty and flair. Soon, other artists took note and began the pilgrimage to Brussels.
.
During our time here, we have greatly enjoyed observing and interacting with all artistic forms. Murals, sculptures, drawings, collages, you name it. Some of it is loud, but much of it sits discreetly in the shadows. Much of it though can trace its lineage to a graffiti artist from the South Bronx.
Brussels is a city of transplants. Where this is Brussels is a city of transplants. Where this is felt the most...where Brussels THRIVES...is in its international culinary scene.
.
It just so happens that we are fluent in the language of "demonstrative appreciation for wonderful cuisine". More often than not, said demonstration leads to an extended and memorable dialog with restaurant proprietors, no matter the country. Tonight was no exception.
.
Navigating our way to the trendy Saint-Gilles district through a determined rain shower, our umbrellas were put to work. We reached our destination, gave our exhausted umbrellas a quick shake, and entered a quaint Italian restaurant named "CiPiace". We chose to sit at the bar. Why? Because we find that doing so is the ideal way in which to take in the scene. It also provides ample and casual opportunities to strike up conversation with ownership and staff.
.
On this busy evening inside the establishment, Giorgia Cipiace herself was our server and she was a DELIGHT. She of the ready smile and gleeful reciprocation of our positive energy. We chatted about her hometown in Italy and her excitement for a future visit to our hometown of New York City. She brought other staff into the conversation, and for those three hours....those memorable three hours.....we felt like the center of her universe.
.
Our choices from the menu were delicious and the pairing of an exquisite bottle of Brunello di Montalcino was spot on.
.
The evening then ended with a flourish. Giorgia called over the staff and they gathered around us and the bar. She poured many digestivo shots, we all raised our glasses and let out an audible "salute!" (sa-LOO-tay), and appreciative nods and smiles were shared.
.
We hugged her goodnight, stepped outside, and it was as if the Gods knew the right thing to do. Looking up, we saw a clear sky and a glowing moon radiating down on the wet cobblestone. Perfetto.

Our great friends Dan and Jennifer were wonderful enough to host us at their summer home on Lake Hopatcong. The weather was perfect and the porkchops from the grill were sublime. Oh, and we may have enjoyed a high quality bottle of red or three as the flame from the patio firepit flickered.

I am going to begin posting frequent but brief obs I am going to begin posting frequent but brief observations about the greatest city in the world, New York City. The little things my wife Huong and I see on a daily basis that some of you may find interesting.
.
SO! Let's begin by adding some color to this smokey gray New York City day, shall we?
.
In today's story we are walking among the vegetation of the High Line, where a sculpture named “Old Tree” was recently erected. Old Tree's radiating red and pink color is distinct and can be seen from quite a distance.
.
The tree’s color and form resemble the branching system of blood vessels in the human body, "inviting viewers to consider the indivisible connection between human and plant life".
.
We see it as more than that. Local residents are immersed not only in the plant life of the High Line, we too are immersed in a city littered with architectural marvels from the turn of the twentieth century as well as towering and shiny feats of modern engineering. And we don't realize it, but we hear the ghostly voices and smell the cuisine of city residents who lived here in generations past. While every neighborhood in the city has been built, erased, and built again, there remain many lasting impressions that are felt by all.
.
I guess that is the beauty of art. We can interpret it any way we like.

Growing up in Glen Rock, NJ, I was a student in He Growing up in Glen Rock, NJ, I was a student in Henrietta Trawinski’s DECA program which focused on developing students’ business and leadership skills through academic conferences and competitions. Mrs T’s program was tops in the country. Glen Rock High School teams would show up at events and roll the competition, year after year, like the 1927 New York Yankees. She had an approach…a model….that worked, and I was raised on it.
.
Friday’s Ansary Entrepreneurship Competition at Stevens Institute of Technology produced what is probably the proudest moment of my teaching career. Of the 120 teams being taught by various instructors in many departments, 5 of my senior innovation teams advanced to the Top 10, and those teams finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 7th.
.
What this photo represents is the next generation who will pass on this model….and tradition…of high achievement. It is springtime and the Trawinski tree is blooming fifteen miles to the east.

First day, we needed to do a final cleaning of our home and hand over the keys
.
Next day we needed to visit Huong's oncologist for her quarterly exam, this one having special meaning since it is one year after her treatment concluded. We received FANTASTIC news today, so we. did. what. we. do. We ventured out on the town for incredible food and wine.
.
This evening was all about charcuterie: Prosciutto di Parma, Duck Prosciutto, Chorizo Soria, Pate de Campagne (pork). An assortment of such stature demands a healthy variety of accompanying cheeses: Soft cow cheese from the Burgundy region, firm goat's milk cheese from Catalonia, hard raw cow's milk cheese from Franche-Comte, among others.
.
Add to that a glorious sangiovese, a beaujolais recommended by Trevor the super nice manager of @Bin152winebar (who built our board and was so pleased we were able to take a photo of his art work!) and two after-dinner digestifs, the night was perfect. It was all the more perfect because I got to spend it with the person who I could never ever imagine being anywhere than by my side.

I shepherded a Hidden NYC food tour group around Chelsea & The Flatiron this week for the first time since March 5th, 2020, and it was like riding a bike. The fun and physical animation of my storytelling was the same as always. And It felt amazing sitting at the tables of my proprietor partners and dining on their exquisite dishes.
.
But more than anything, I loved meeting and getting to know strangers visiting town who entrusted me with their evening.
